King's table: how many it seats

Banquet tables pushed end to end into one long feasting table. How many people it seats at every length, and how many runs a guest list needs.

24 ft king's table
Three 8 ft banquet tables end to end: 24 ft long, seating 26.

A king's table, also called a feasting or family-style table, is a row of rectangular tables pushed end to end into one long table. Count the sides, then add the two ends: each 8-foot table seats four on each side, each 6-foot table three.

Leave the ends empty if you want the table to read as one long line in photos, and subtract two from each count.

King's tables for your guest count

Using runs of up to four 8-foot tables (32 ft, 34 seats), which is about as long as a table can be before serving and getting out become a problem:

Spacing

Leave at least 60 inches between parallel runs, measured edge to edge, so chairs on both sides can push back and a server can pass. Each run needs a 3 ft ring of floor around it: a 24 ft run of single banquet tables takes about 255 sq ft.

Questions

How many people fit at a king's table?

Eight per 8-foot banquet table, four on each side, plus one at each end of the run. Three tables end to end (24 ft) seat 26; four (32 ft) seat 34.

How many people fit at a king's table made of 6-foot tables?

Six per 6-foot table, three on each side, plus one at each end. Four 6-foot tables (24 ft) seat 26, the same as three 8-foot tables: both give each guest 24 inches of table edge.

How many king's tables do I need for 100 guests?

Three runs using 12 eight-foot tables in all, seating 102. Runs much longer than 32 to 40 feet are hard to serve and hard to leave, so split a big guest list into several.

How wide should a king's table be?

A single row of banquet tables is 30 inches wide, which is tight once there are place settings on both sides and a centrepiece down the middle. Two rows pushed together (60 inches) or 40-inch farm tables give room for candles, florals and family-style platters; the seat count stays the same.
